## A Durable alternative for when the website is the whole job.

By the Ember team · Updated October 27, 2026 · 8 min read

The short answer

Choose Durable if you want the website to come with a business toolkit: online bookings synced to your calendar, paid bookings, a customer list, and AI tools that reply to leads and reviews and write social posts. Choose Ember if the website is the whole job: Ember builds the pages around what you tell it, writes the copy, publishes the site, and makes each later change when you ask. Ember builds content sites; it has no bookings, payments or CRM.

Durable's Launch plan is $25 a month, or $22 a month billed yearly, and its free plan is a private website preview with 300 AI credits ([Durable pricing](https://durable.com/pricing), checked October 27, 2026). You can build and preview a site for free with 150 starter credits; publishing it needs a paid plan, from $9 a month ([pricing](https://embersites.com/pricing/)).

### A business toolkit, or just the website

Durable calls itself “the complete AI business builder” ([durable.com](https://durable.com/), checked October 27, 2026). Its site starts from three questions about the business (industry, name and goals), and Durable says the first version is ready in about 30 seconds; you then adjust it in a drag-and-drop editor, or with AI edits on its paid plans. Around the site sit the other tools: a CRM, bookings, lead and Google review replies, social posts, keyword research and directory listings.

If you will use those tools, paying for them in one subscription makes sense. If what you need is a site that explains what you do and brings in enquiries, most of that bundle sits unused, and the work that matters is the site itself: which pages it has, what they say, what the first button asks for. Ember does only that part, and finishes it.

### A piano teacher's sentence, and the site Ember built from it

This is the whole first request for a demonstration site for a fictional piano teacher in Raleigh:

“I teach piano in Raleigh to kids and adults. Show my lesson rates and let parents request a free trial lesson.”

The top of the home page Ember's builder agent made from that sentence on its Legato design, plus two or three follow-up messages supplying the owner's details and moving the trial-lesson form onto the home page. The studio, teacher and rates are fictional, and the photos come from the design's stock library. Captured October 2026 for Ember's fly-over films, cropped.

The page answers what a parent asks first. Each piano key is a level from Primer to Adult, the monthly rates for 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons have their own section, and a “Free trial” button sits in the top corner, with the trial request form further down the same page. Changing it is one more request, such as “add a summer camp week”.

Ember has no booking calendar, so a real teacher would take trial requests through that form, which needs Ember's Professional plan ($29 a month), or point the button at the scheduling tool she already uses. Durable's Launch plan includes bookings synced to a calendar for $25 a month.

### When Durable is the better fit

- Customers book you online. Durable's Launch plan takes bookings synced to your calendar, with intake questions and paid bookings; an Ember site can only link out to a booking tool.
- You want a customer list and help following up. Durable includes a CRM, and its AI tools reply to leads, ask for reviews and answer Google reviews. Ember has a form inbox on Professional and no CRM.
- You want the tools for less than Ember's form plan. For the piano teacher, Durable Launch at $25 a month includes forms and bookings; Ember's contact form needs Professional at $29.
- A team works on it. Durable Grow allows unlimited team members; every Ember plan has one user.
- You want no builder branding from the first paid plan. Durable removes it on Launch; Ember removes its “Made with Ember” badge only on Premier, at $49.

### When Ember is the better fit

- The website is all you need. Ember publishes on your own domain from $9 a month, against $25 a month (or $22 billed yearly) for Durable Launch.
- You would rather say what matters than answer a form about it. Ember builds the pages around your sentence, like the piano teacher's rates and trial lesson, and writes the copy.
- Your details already live somewhere. Ember starts from your [Google listing](https://embersites.com/google-business-profile-website/), [Instagram](https://embersites.com/instagram-to-website/) or current website instead of a blank questionnaire.
- Changes should be requests, not editing sessions: new rates, a new class or a new photo is one sentence, in Ember or from [Claude or ChatGPT](https://embersites.com/build-website-with-claude-or-chatgpt/).

### What the first year costs

| Plan | Price | What it adds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Durable Launch | $25/mo, or $22/mo billed yearly | Your own domain (registration up to $20 included), bookings, CRM, 1,000 AI credits a month |
| Durable Grow | $49/mo, or $41/mo billed yearly | Unlimited team members, site translation, 5,000 AI credits a month, $40 domain credit |
| Ember Personal | $9/mo ($108 over 12 months) | Your own domain, one published site, 500 credits a month; shows a “Made with Ember” badge |
| Ember Professional | $29/mo ($348 over 12 months) | Forms with email notifications, site analytics, 1,500 credits a month |
| Ember Premier | $49/mo ($588 over 12 months) | No “Made with Ember” badge, password-protected pages, member-only areas |

Source: Durable prices are as listed on [Durable's pricing page](https://durable.com/pricing) on October 27, 2026, viewed from the US; the yearly prices are per month, billed yearly. Ember prices are before tax from [Ember's pricing](https://embersites.com/pricing/); every Ember plan also includes a free embersites.net address, and a domain bought through Ember costs extra.

### Other Durable alternatives, by what you need

- You want to design every page yourself, with a store or bookings on the same site: Wix ([Ember as a Wix alternative](https://embersites.com/wix-alternative/) compares the two).
- You want a polished template and an editor to finish it in: Squarespace ([Ember as a Squarespace alternative](https://embersites.com/squarespace-alternative/)).
- You want control over code, hosting and plugins: WordPress, at the cost of looking after it yourself ([Ember vs WordPress](https://embersites.com/ember-vs-wordpress/)).
- Selling is the main job: a commerce platform such as Shopify, which is built around the store.

### How to move from Durable to Ember

- Open the [website import starter](https://embersites.com/import/?from=website) and paste your Durable site's address.
- Create a free Ember account. Ember reads your public pages and rebuilds them in an Ember design: the pages and navigation, your text, logo, colors, photos and contact forms.
- Read what Ember tells you it could not bring over. Bookings, your CRM contacts and anything else behind Durable's login stay behind, and Ember says so rather than faking them.
- Ask for any changes in plain words, then publish on a paid plan.
- Connect your domain in Ember's site settings, which list the DNS records to set wherever the domain is registered. Keep your Durable plan until the Ember site is live on it.

If Durable registered your domain for you, its pricing FAQ says to contact Durable to have it transferred to you when you cancel, which takes a couple of weeks and has a minimum subscription time ([Durable pricing](https://durable.com/pricing), checked October 27, 2026). Start that before you cancel.

Questions

### Frequently asked questions

### Is Durable any good?

For a service business that wants bookings, a customer list and AI marketing tools in one place, it covers a lot from $25 a month. If you only need the website, you pay for tools you won't use, and Ember publishes a site on your own domain from $9 a month.

### Is Ember a good Durable alternative for a small business?

For a site that explains what you do and brings in enquiries, such as a teacher, studio, trade or practice, yes. If customers book or pay through the site, or you want a CRM, Durable fits better, because Ember does not offer them.

### How is Ember's AI different from Durable's?

Durable generates a first version from three questions, then you adjust it in its editor or with AI edits. Ember starts from whatever you tell it about the business, or from your Google listing, Instagram or current site, and every later change is a request to Ember rather than an editing session.

### Can Ember import my Durable site?

Yes, if it is public. Paste its address into Ember's website import and Ember rebuilds the pages, text, images and contact forms in one of its designs. It tells you what it could not bring over, such as bookings or CRM contacts.

### Can I keep my domain if I leave Durable?

Yes. A domain registered elsewhere can be connected to Ember on any paid plan. If Durable registered it for you, Durable's FAQ says to contact them to transfer it, which takes a couple of weeks.

### What does Ember cost compared with Durable?

Ember publishes on your own domain from $9 a month. Durable Launch is $25 a month, or $22 a month billed yearly. Neither free plan publishes: both let you build and preview first.
