The decisions a website asks of you
A builder like Wix hands you the tools and the choices: which of its more than 2,000 templates, which fonts and colors, which sections go on each page, what the headline says, which apps to add, how it all looks on a phone. For people who like that work, the freedom is the point. For a business owner it is also a list of decisions to get through before anyone sees the site, and again each time something changes.
Ember takes that list on. It starts from what you already have, makes the design and layout calls for your kind of business, writes the copy, and shows you a finished site. Your part is checking that it says the right things about the business.
One sentence, and the site Ember built from it
This is the whole first request for a demonstration site for a fictional Denver electrician:
“I'm a licensed electrician in Denver. Make my emergency number huge and let homeowners request a free quote.”
Ember built the page around what that customer needs: the emergency line is the largest thing on it, and the quote request is the next button down. Changing it is one more request, such as “add a section for EV charger installs”.
Ember and Wix side by side
| Ember | Wix | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Business owners who want a professional site without the website work | People who want to design and control every part of the site |
| How a site starts | You describe the business, or import your Google listing, Instagram or current website | One of over 2,000 templates, or an AI draft from a prompt |
| Decisions before launch | Ember chooses the design, layout and copy; you review and adjust | You choose the template, then the fonts, colors, sections and apps |
| Changing it later | Say what you want changed, in Ember or from Claude or ChatGPT | Edit it yourself in the editor, or with Wix's AI tools |
| Ready for customers | Mobile layouts and the SEO basics included; a contact form with an inbox and email alerts on Professional | Forms, apps, a store and bookings, depending on your plan and setup |
| Online store and bookings | Not supported; link to the tools you already use | eCommerce, payments and scheduling on Core and up |
| Cheapest plan on your own domain | $9 a month (Personal) | $17 a month, billed yearly (Light) |
| Without the builder's branding | Premier, $49 a month | Every paid plan |
| Free plan | Build and preview free; publishing needs a paid plan | Publish free, with Wix branding and no custom domain |

When Wix is the better fit
- You sell products or take payments on the site. Wix includes eCommerce and payments from its Core plan; Ember does neither.
- You take appointments. Wix includes scheduling from Core; an Ember site can only link out to the booking tool you already use.
- You enjoy designing pages yourself and want control of every element's position.
- You need a live site for $0. Wix's free plan publishes with its branding; Ember needs a paid plan to publish.
- You want no builder branding for less. Wix removes it on every paid plan from $17 a month; Ember removes its “Made with Ember” badge only on Premier, at $49.
- You expect to make lots of changes yourself. In Wix's editor your own time is the cost; every change Ember's agent makes spends credits from your monthly allotment (500 a month on Personal).
When Ember is the better fit
- You want a site that looks professional without choosing templates, fonts or layouts. Ember picks a design for your trade and builds the pages.
- You'd rather not write it either. Ember drafts the copy from what you tell it and what it finds on Google, Instagram or your old site.
- You want what brings in customers ready from the start: a clear offer, pages that read well on a phone, the SEO basics, and on Professional ($29 a month) a contact form that emails you.
- Keeping it current shouldn't be a project. New hours, a new service or a new photo is one request, in Ember or from Claude or ChatGPT.
- You want the lowest price to be live on your own domain: $9 a month on Personal, against $17 a month billed yearly for Wix Light.
What the first year costs
| Plan | Price | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Wix Light | $17/mo billed yearly ($204) | Your own domain, no Wix branding, a free domain for the first year |
| Wix Core | $29/mo billed yearly ($348) | Payments, basic eCommerce, scheduling |
| Ember Personal | $9/mo ($108 over 12 months) | Your own domain, one site, 500 credits a month; shows a “Made with Ember” badge |
| Ember Professional | $29/mo ($348 over 12 months) | Forms with email notifications, site analytics, 1,500 credits a month |
| Ember Premier | $49/mo ($588 over 12 months) | No “Made with Ember” badge, password-protected pages, member-only areas |
Source: Wix prices are yearly subscriptions paid upfront, before tax, as listed on Wix's plans page on October 20, 2026. Ember prices are before tax from Ember's pricing; every Ember plan also includes a free embersites.net address, and a domain bought through Ember costs extra.
Other Wix alternatives, by what you need
- Selling is the main job: a commerce platform such as Shopify, which is built around the store.
- You want the most control over code, hosting and plugins: WordPress, at the cost of looking after it yourself (Ember vs WordPress).
- You like the template-and-editor approach but want a different look: Squarespace is the closest like-for-like swap.
- You want a quick interactive page or small app inside your AI assistant: ChatGPT Sites.
How to move from Wix to Ember
- Open the website import starter and paste your Wix site's address.
- Create a free Ember account. Ember reads your public pages and rebuilds them in an Ember design: the same pages and navigation, your text, logo, colors, photos and contact forms. It does not copy the Wix layout.
- Read what Ember tells you it could not bring over. A store, booking calendar, payments or Wix member accounts stay behind, and Ember says so rather than faking them.
- Ask for any changes in plain words, then publish on a paid plan.
- Connect your domain in Ember's site settings, which list the DNS records to set wherever the domain is registered. Keep your Wix plan until the Ember site is live on it.
Wix sites have to stay on Wix's own servers (Wix Help Center, checked October 20, 2026), so moving means rebuilding the site somewhere else, which is the step Ember does for you.
